A four-member delegation from India’s Central Institute of Coastal Engineering for Fishery (CICEF), an institution under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, concluded a visit to Sri Lanka this week to review the proposed development of the Point Pedro Fishery Harbour in the Northern Province.
During their stay from September 8 to 12, the delegation held discussions with Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, Hon. Ramalingam Chandrasekar, and Governor of the Northern Province, Hon. Nagalingam Vethanayahan. Meetings were also held with senior officials, including the Ministry Secretary and the Chief Secretary of the Northern Province, focusing on the modalities of implementing the harbour project with financial assistance from the Government of India.
The delegation carried out technical inspections of the proposed site in Point Pedro on September 9 and 10, joined by Sri Lankan fisheries officials and local stakeholders.
The initiative is part of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between India and Sri Lanka in March 2022 to enhance cooperation in developing fisheries harbours. Officials noted that the project is expected to boost fisheries infrastructure, improve the livelihoods of local fishermen, and support regional development, further strengthening India–Sri Lanka ties.
